This cheese sticks recipe is a great snack for kids and adults alike. It's easy to prepare and can be customized with different flavors.

  • 4 oz plain flour
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 oz butter or block margarine cut into small pieces
  • 2 oz mature cheddar cheese grated
  • 1 egg beaten
  • parmesan cheese to sprinkle


  • Sift the flour and salt in a bowl. Rub in the fat until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
  • Add the cheese and bind the mixture together with a little beaten egg. Knead lightly to give a smooth dough.
  • Roll out on a lightly floured surface to an oblong 25 x 15 cm (10 x 6 inches). Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle liberally with Parmesan cheese. Press the Parmesan lightly into the egg.
  • Cut into sticks 6 cm X 5 mm (2 1/2 x 1/4 inches) and place on baking sheets. Bake in the oven at 200°C (400°F) mark 6 for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
