This is a chunky chutney, made with tomatoes and apples. Use it on sandwiches or as a topping for cheese on toast.

  • 1 1/2 lb tomatoes peeled, deseeded and chopped
  • 1 apple peeled, cored and roughly chopped
  • 2 oz onion chopped
  • 1 garlic clove crushed
  • 4 oz soft light brown sugar finely chopped
  • 1 tsp fresh root ginger
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 4 oz sultanas
  • 3 tbsp white wine vinegar


  • Mix all the ingredients together in a pan. Bring to the boil and simmer for 30 minutes or until reduced and thick. Cool and serve
