method
1. Slice the potatoes.
2. Grate the onion and cheese.
3. Arrange the potato slices in a well buttered, shallow ovenproof dish and sprinkle each layer with onion, cheese and salt and pepper. Finish with a thick layer of cheese and dot with butter.
4. Beat the egg and milk together and pour carefully over the potatoes.
5. Cover the dish with foil and bake at 180°C, 350°F, Gas No. 4 for 1 1/2 hours or until the potatoes are cooked and the topping is golden.
