Mustard paste: Take 7 oz of mustard seeds (rai) and wash well. Grind to a paste by adding just enough water to get a paste-like consistency.

  • 1.1 lb Fish rohu. cleaned
  • 1 3/4 oz Mustard sarson paste
  • 4 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Turmeric haldi powder
  • 4 tsp Mustard oil
  • 4 Banana leaves


  • Mix together the mustard paste, salt, and turmeric powder. Apply over the fish pieces.
  • Brush 1 tsp of oil over each piece of fish and individually wrap in banana leaves.
  • Steam the wrapped fish either in an idli container or in a perforated container, put over a large utensil with boiling water (one third level). Cover the vessel and cook over low heat till the fish is done.
  • Serve hot.
