  • 1 medium sized onion
  • 1/2 green pepper
  • 1 medium sized carrot
  • 1 stick of celery
  • 2 tbsp margarine
  • 1 lb cooked soya beans
  • 2 tbsp molasses
  • 3 tbsp chopped parsley
  • 1/4 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/4 tsp dried savory
  • salt and pepper
  • 2 1/2 floz tomato juice
  • medium oatmeal


  • Skin the onion and chop it finely with the pepper.
  • Grate the carrot coarsely, and slice the celery thinly.
  • Grease a medium sized ovenproof casserole with a little of the margarine.
  • Mix together the vegetables and soya beans.
  • Warm the molasses and stir it into the vegetables.
  • Add the herbs and salt and pepper to taste.
  • Turn the mixture into the dish and pour over 50 ml tomato juice.
  • Sprinkle thickly with oatmeal.
  • Melt the remaining margarine and sprinkle it over the oatmeal.
  • Cover the dish, and bake in a moderate oven, 180°C, Gas 4 for 45 minutes.
  • Pour over a little extra tomato juice if the contents seem dry during this time.
  • Remove the lid and bake for a further 15 minutes.
  • Serve hot from the dish.
