  • 6 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 cup + 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine cut in pieces
  • 6 ounces halva cut in small pieces
  • 1/2 cup sweet red wine
  • 2 tablespoons potato starch
  • 6 large matzos
  • sprinkles for decoration

  • Put the sugar and chocolate in a saucepan and add 1 cup water. Bring to a boil over low heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon.
  • Add the butter or margarine, halva, and wine. Continue stirring until the mixture boils again, then remove the pan from the heat.
  • Mix the potato starch with remaining 2 tablespoons water, then stir starch into the chocolate mixture.
  • Return pan to the heat and cook over low heat, stirring until the mixture thickens, about 8 minutes. Remove from the heat.
  • Put one of the matzos on a platter large enough for it to lie flat. Use a metal spatula to spread a thin, even layer of the chocolate mixture over the matzo.
  • Place another matzo on top and spread it with more chocolate. Repeat with the remaining matzos, finishing with a chocolate layer.
  • Scatter sprinkles over the cake. Chill before serving, and do not eat until the following day.
  • To serve, cut the cake into small rectangles about 1 inch by 2 inches, using a long, sharp knife.
