  • 4 lb sweet apples
  • 1 lb seedless raisins or sultanas
  • 1/2 lb chopped nuts
  • Pinch of ground cloves
  • 1/2 pint brown rice or apple cider vinegar
  • 1 lb soft brown sugar optional
  • 2 oranges


  • Peel, core and chop the apples.
  • Place the apples, raisins, nuts, spice and vinegar in a covered pot and simmer until soft and thoroughly cooked.
  • Add the sugar, and the juice and rind of the oranges, and cook, uncovered, until thick, stirring at least until the sugar is dissolved.
  • Store in jars as described above. This chutney will keep well in a cool, dark cupboard for several months if sugar is used.
