
Toasted Sandwiches
Ingredients
- 12 slices bread
- 2 oz butter or margarine
- watercress sprigs to garnish
filling 1
- 3 slices cooked ham
- 2 oz Cheddar cheese grated
- salt and pepper
filling 2
- 4 1/4 oz can sardines in tomato sauce
- 2 slices onion finely chopped
- salt and pepper
Instructions
- Remove and discard the crusts from the bread. Butter each slice.
- For filling 1, place a slice of ham on the unbuttered side of each of three slices of bread. Sprinkle with cheese and seasoning, then cover with second slices of bread, buttered side out, place in a sandwich toaster and cook for 5 minutes, or until crisp and golden.
- For filling 2, remove the bones and mash the sardines. Spread the sardines on the unbuttered side of each of three slices of bread, sprinkle the onion on top, season and cover with second slices of bread, buttered side out, and toast as above.
- Garnish with watercress sprigs and serve with celery sticks and tomatoes.
Cook's Tip
- If you do not have a sandwich toaster, then make the sandwiches and brown both sides under a hot grill. Or try quickly shallow frying the sandwiches. Drain on absorbent kitchen paper.
