llsh Bhat (Fish cooked with rice)
Ingredients
- 14 oz Rice Basmati, washed in a number of changes of water, soaked in enough water to cover for 30 minutes, drained
- 8 Fish hilsa or any firm white river fish, fillets
- 1 tsp Turmeric haldi powder
- Salt to taste
mix together with a little water to make a paste:
- 1 1/2 tbsp Yellow mustard seeds rai
- 2 Green chillies
- 1 tbsp Mustard sarson oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Rub the turmeric powder and salt on the fish and keep aside for 10 minutes. Then rub the mustard paste and lay the fish out in a round dish with a tight-fitting lid so that it can be put in the pan where the rice is being boiled for cooking.
- Bring 4 cups water to the boil and add the rice. Bring back to the boil and then lower heat and cook covered until the rice is half cooked.
- Place the round dish with the fish fillets in the centre of the rice, cover and cook on very low heat for another
- 5 - 6 minutes or until the rice is done.
- Remove from heat and carefully remove the round dish.
- Serve the cooked fish with the rice.
