  • 6 oz butter or margarine
  • 6 oz caster sugar
  • 3 tablespoons black treacle
  • 3 eggs
  • 12 oz self raising flour
  • 2 tablespoons milk

for the icing

  • 2 oz butter or margarine
  • 1 tablespoon black treacle
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 8 oz icing sugar sifted


  • Line and grease a deep 20 cm (8 in) square cake tin.
  • Cream the butter or margarine, sugar and treacle together until light and fluffy.
  • Gradually beat in the eggs, adding a tablespoon of flour if necessary to prevent the mixture from curdling.
  • Carefully fold in the flour and milk.
  • Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake in a moderate oven for 1 hour or until a metal skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
  • Beat all icing ingredients together until smooth. Swirl on cake as shown.
