American Style Hamburgers
To be eaten in true American style, hamburgers must be served with tomato ketchup, mayonnaise, a selection of spicy relishes, cola or lager and French fries or potato crisps.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lb minced beef
- 2 oz fresh white breadcrumbs
- 1 tsp. spoon dried mixed herbs
- Salt and freshly ground
- black pepper
- 1 egg beaten
To serve:
- 4 soft hamburger buns or picnic rolls
- 1 oz butter
- 4 large lettuce leaves
- 2 to matoes sliced
- 1 small onion peeled and sliced into rings
Instructions
- Put the beef, breadcrumbs and herbs in a large mixing bowl and mix well together. Season to taste with salt and pepper and bind the mixture with the egg. Shape the mixture into four thick hamburgers and chill for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat the grill until very hot, then grill the hamburgers for about 8 minutes on each side or until well-browned and cooked through. If they are becoming too brown, turn down the grill to moderate or low and cook for a longer time.
- Meanwhile, split the buns or rolls in half and butter both halves. Reshape and put in a slow oven to warm through.
- When the hamburgers are ready, remove the buns or rolls from the oven, put lettuce, tomato and onion on one half of each, top with the hamburgers and other half of the bread.
