When you need a recipe for some tasty custard creams, this is the one to try.

  • 8 oz butter
  • 1 cup caster sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 2 1/4 cups plain flour
  • 1/2 cup custard powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

for the butter icing

  • 1 cup icing sugar sifted
  • 2 tablespoons butter softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 2 tablespoons condensed milk


  • Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Gradually beat in the egg and vanilla essence.
  • Sift dry ingredients and fold into mixture.
  • Break off pieces and roll into small balls.
  • Place on ungreased baking trays and press down with a fork.
  • Bake in a moderate oven 180-190°C (350-375°F) for 15 minutes.
  • Cool on a wire rack. When cool, join pairs together with butter icing.

  • Gradually beat half the icing sugar into the softened butter, add vanilla essence.
  • Beat in condensed milk and add remaining icing sugar.
