1. Sift flours and spices into a mixing bowl, adding any grist remaining in sifter.
2. Blend in sugar. Rub butter into flour mixture until crumbly. Stir in dried fruit.
3. Beat egg and add with milk.
4. Mix quickly to a soft dough using a round-bladed knife.
5. Place rough tablespoons of the dough onto a greased baking tray and bake in a hot oven 200-230°C (400-450°F) for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
6. Serve warm or cold with butter.
