method
1. Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F) gas mark 5.
2. Cream the butter and sugar in a bowl.
3. Add 5 x 15 ml spoons of water to the dates, heat the dates for 2 minutes until soft, either in the microwave or over a moderate heat. Mash the bananas on a plate and mix with the softened dates.
4. Add the eggs gradually to the creamed butter and sugar. Mix in the date and banana puree and fold in the flour and baking powder.
5. Line a 25 cm x 15 cm tin with greaseproof paper. Spoon the cake mixture into the tin, level the surface and bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes.
6. Cool the cake on a wire rack. Mix the mascarpone with the icing sugar and spread over the top of the cool cake and cut the cake into small squares.

Is it ok to use normal caster sugar, i have guests and cant afford to go out at the moment.
