method
1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) Gas Mk 7.
2. Sift the flour, salt and cocoa into a bowl and rub in the butter or margarine.
3. Warm the syrup and add it to the mixture, then add the chopped dates and rhubarb.
4. Mix with the milk to a thick batter.
5. Pour into a greased baking tin and bake in a preheated oven for 20-30 minutes.
6. Serve hot with cream or custard.
