1. Heat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas2. Brush the inside of an 850 ml (1 1/2 pint) ovenproof pie dish with melted margarine.
2. Put the rice, milk and margarine into a saucepan. Bring just to boiling point, then remove from the heat. Stir in the dates and orange zest. Pour into the prepared oven- proof pie dish and place the dish on a baking sheet.
3. Bake in the oven for about 2 hours, or until the rice is tender and most of the milk has been absorbed. Serve hot.
