Mulled wine

ingredients

makes about 900 ml (1 1/2pt).
300 ml (1/2 pt) water
100 g (4 oz) sugar
4 cloves
5 cm (2 in) stick of cinnamon
2 lemons, thinly sliced
1 bottle burgundy or claret
1 orange or lemon, thinly sliced

method

1. Boil the water, sugar and spices together.

2. Add the lemons, stir and leave to stand for 10 minutes.

3. Pour back into the saucepan and add the red wine.

4. Heat but do not boil.

5. Strain the wine into a bowl and serve hot, decorated with the orange or lemon slices.
