method
1. Rub butter into the sifted flour and ground cloves until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
2. Mix in the dates, sugar and walnuts.
3. Dissolve baking powder and bicarbonate of soda in milk. Stir into the dry ingredients with egg.
4. Spoon into 2 well greased nut roll tins.
5. Bake in a moderate oven 180-190°C (350-375°F) for 35 to 40 minutes.
6. Leave in tins for a few minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool.
7. Serve sliced with butter.
