1. Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 4/180°C/fan oven 160°C. Line a 20 cm (8 inch) square tin with non stick baking parchment
2. Sift the flour and cocoa powder into a mixing bowl and stir in the sugar
3. Pour the margarine over the dry ingredients along with the egg, milk and almond essence, and mix to a soft batter Fold in the cherries and chocolate chips.
4. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 25 minutes.
5. Allow it to cool in the tin for 15 minutes and then carefully transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
6. Cut it into 12 brownies.
