1. In a saucepan heat together milk, sugar, salt and butter.
2. Cool to lukewarm.
3. Place lukewarm water in a large mixing bowl and sprinkle over yeast, stirring until dissolved.
4. Add milk mixture and half the flour. Beat until smooth.
5. Add cheese and herbs.
6. Stir in rest of flour by hand, adding enough to form a stiff dough.
7. Knead on a floured board until smooth and elastic.
8. Place in a buttered bowl, turn dough to coat top with butter and cover bowl with plastic film.
9. Leave to rise in a warm place, free from draught, until doubled in bulk (30 to 40 minutes).
10. Knock down dough and knead until smooth.
11. Divide into 12 equal portions.
12. Roll each piece into a round and place on a greased baking tray.
13. Cover with a dry cloth and leave to rise until doubled in size.
14. Glaze buns with milk.
15. Bake in a moderately hot oven 190-200°C (375-400°F) for 15 to 20 minutes or until buns sound hollow when tapped on bottom.
