Dr Johnson's choice recipe

ingredients

1 bottle red wine
12 lumps sugar
6 cloves
600 ml (1 pt) boiling water
150 g ml (1/4 pt) curacao
150 g ml (1/4 pt) brandy, optional
nutmeg

method

1. This is the classic mull of the eighteenth century.

2. Pour the wine into a saucepan, add the sugar and cloves and bring to near boiling point

3. Add 600 ml (1 pt) boiling water.

4. Pour in the curacao and the brandy (if used).

5. Pour into glasses and grate nutmeg on top.

serving amount

makes about 1.7 litre (3 pt).
