1. Preheat the grill to medium.
2. Reserve 2 tablespoons of the oil and mix the basil with the remainder.
3. Add the garlic, capers and salt and pepper to taste and mix well.
4. Cut the aubergines (eggplant) lengthwise into slices about 4 mm (1/6 in) thick and brush them with the reserved oil.
5. Cook under the grill for 2 minutes on each side, turning them carefully. The grill should not be too hot otherwise the aubergines will burn.
6. Arrange them on a platter, sprinkle with the basil sauce and serve immediately.
