method
1. Make a layer of potato slices on the bottom of a well-buttered cake tin.
2. Sprinkle with onion and dot with butter.
3. Add salt and pepper to taste, then repeat the layers until the tin is full.
4. Finish with a layer of potatoes spread with butter.
5. Cover with a lid or a heatproof plate and bake in a preheated moderate oven 180°C (350°F) Gas Mark 4 for 1 hour.
