Cheese and Potato Pie


serves 4
1 kg (2 lb) potatoes, peeled and sliced
8 oz (225 g) cheese, grated
2 eggs salt pepper
1 1/4 cup (1/2 pint) 300 ml milk
1/2 stick (4 Tbsp) 2 oz (50 g) butter, melted


1. Make alternate layers of potato slices and cheese in a buttered baking dish, ending with cheese.

2. Beat together the eggs, salt, pepper, milk and butter and pour into the dish.

3. Bake in a preheated moderate oven 180°C (350°F) Gas Mark 4 for 1 hour.

Serve hot.

You pour it into the dish, after arranging the potato and cheese in layers, as it says in the recipe. If you were supposed to mix it around with the potato and cheese it'd have said so. How much clearer can it be?!

I just made this and it came out rubbish! try using a recipe that uses mashed potato! much better x

Just made this its still in the oven but looks yummy i think its better than recipe with mash though because they end up tasting like baby food!!! i added some fried onion and leek and some tomato garnish and am very pleased with the outcome!!!!

Arent u meant to boil the potatoes first to make it soft and easy to mash dont say on the recipe

My Mother used to make this exact recipe, which was a very special dish for Saturday evening, 50 years ago. Mashed potato ruins it.

The potatoes should be boiled for a short while first to soften them.
Tried the recipe as written and was rubbish
