Fruit Crumble

ingredients

serves 4-6
1 1/2 lb (700 g) raw fruit, eg apples, plums gooseberries, rhubarb, blackcurrants
granulated sugar
1/3 cup (75 g) margarine or butter
1 2/3 cup (175 g) plain flour (All purpose)

method

1. Prepare the fruit as for stewing and layer it in a 900 ml - 1. 1 1itre (1 1/2 - 2 pt) ovenproof dish with 100-175 g (4-6 oz) sugar, depending on the sharpness of the fruit.

2. Rub the fat into the flour until the mixture is the texture of fine crumbs, stir in 50 g (2 oz) sugar.

3. Sprinkle the mixture on top of the prepared fruit and bake in the oven at 200°C (400°F) mark 6 for 30-40 minutes.

4. Alternatively, stew the fruit before putting it in the dish and bake for 20-30 minutes.

5. Serve with custard or cream.
