1. Mix together the onion and garlic clove, and place in a non-metallic dish.
2. Add the: soy sauce, oil, cider vinegar and tomato purée.
3. Stir in the sugar and Chinese five spice powder, and season well.
4. Marinate the pork ribs for 1 - 2 hours, turning occasionally.
5. Cook on the barbecue, or in an oven preheated to 200°C, 400°F, gas mark 6 for 40 - 45 minutes.
6. Serve with a seasonal salad.
