1. Take a clean, firm tomato and, using a sharp knife, halve it by making a series of zigzag cuts.
2. When you have gone right round the tomato, gently pull the halves apart.
3. Alternatively, use a potato peeler to make the zigzag cuts.
4. Besides being a decorative way of presenting tomatoes as part of a large salad, small cherry tomatoes made into 'lilies' can also garnish hot or cold sliced meats.
