method
1. Sift the flour, cornflour, sugar, and salt into a bowl.
2. Chop the walnuts and dates and add to the dry ingredients.
3. Whisk together the oil and egg and add to the flour, fruit, and nuts.
4. Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in the boiling water, and stir into the other ingredients.
5. Beat well to a soft consistency.
6. Pour into a greased 23 X 13 X 7 cm loaf tin and bake in a moderate oven, 180°C, Gas 4, for about 1 hour until firm to the touch.
7. Leave to cool slightly before turning out of the tin.
8. Serve sliced, spread with butter.
