Hedgehogs and Ladybirds

ingredients

makes about 16
1/2 stick (4 Tbsp) 2 oz (50 g) butter
1/4 cup (50 g) 2 oz caster sugar (superfine granulated)
1 egg, beaten
1/3 cup (50 g) 2 oz self-raising flour
1 tbsp (15 ml) milk
chocolate butter frosting, chocolate buttons, silver or gold balls, and dolly mixtures to decorate hedgehogs
175 g (6 oz) bought marzipan
red colouring
chocolate butter frosting
dolly mixtures and Matchmakers to decorate ladybirds

method

1. Whisk the butter and sugar together thoroughly in a bowl until pale and fluffy, then gradually beat in the egg and finally fold in the flour and milk.

2. Divide the mixture between sixteen well-buttered patty tins with rounded bases. Bake in the oven at 180°C (350°F) mark 4 for about 1 5 minutes; cool on wire racks.

3. For the hedgehogs: cover half the cold buns with chocolate butter frosting, shaping to form a snout. Decorate with halved chocolate buttons, gold balls for the eyes and dolly mixture jellies for the snout.

4. For the ladybirds: colour the marzipan a deep pink with red colouring, roll out thinly and use to cover remaining buns. Pipe lines and spots on to the ladybirds with butter frosting and use dolly mixtures for the eyes and pieces of Matchmakers for the antennae.
