1. Put the potatoes in cold water, bring to the boil and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until tender. Drain, then cut into wedges.
2. Meanwhile, make the dressing. Mix the soured cream, mayonnaise and dill together in a large bowl, then season well.
3. To assemble the salad, put the potatoes, gherkins and herrings in a bowl with the dressing and toss together. Check the seasoning and serve.
