Cheese and ham rolls recipe

ingredients

8 slices cheese, processed or Gouda
8 slices cooked ham
225 g (8 oz) cottage cheese
freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon chopped parsley or snipped chives

Tomato sauce

15 g (1/2 oz) butter
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, crushed
400 g (14 oz) can tomatoes
1 teaspoon sugar
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon chopped parsley or basil
salt and freshly ground black pepper

method

1. Heat the oven to 200°C (400°F) Gas 6.

2. To make the sauce: melt the butter with the oil in a saucepan and lightly cook the onion and crushed garlic until soft. Add all the remaining ingredients, breaking up the tomatoes if necessary. Bring to the boil, then lower the heat, cover the pan and simmer for 30 minutes. Adjust seasoning if necessary.

3. Meanwhile, place a slice of cheese on each piece of ham. Season the cottage cheese with pepper, stir in the parsley or chives and divide evenly between the ham and cheese slices. Roll up and place in a single layer in an ovenproof dish, with the joins underneath. Pour the tomato sauce over the ham slices and place in the oven for 10 minutes until bubbly on top. For a crisper topping, scatter a little grated cheese mixed with a few breadcrumbs over the top before baking.
