1. Prepare and shred the red cabbage finely.
2. Skin and chop the onion finely and peel, core, and slice the apples.
3. Melt the fat in a saucepan, add the onion and fry gently for 5 minutes.
4. Add the cabbage, apples, and syrup and cook over very gentle heat for 10 minutes, shaking the pan frequently.
5. Add the lemon juice, vinegar, and seasoning.
6. Cover and simmer gently for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. Season again if required before serving.
