1. Simmer or saute the chopped onion and the crushed garlic, if used, until tender.
2. Add to the beans, blend or sieve and season to taste.
3. Serve hot as a sauce with brown rice and vegetables.
4. Alternatively, simmer for a few minutes more to thicken and use as a vegetable spread on brown toast, garnished with chopped spring onions or parsley.
