As this title implies, each dish in this category may be looked on as complete in itself. Generally, these items are individually priced a la carte dishes. In terms of appearance, flavour and texture, single hors-d'oeuvre should be high-quality items. Although some may be cooked, in many instances very little preparation is involved because most of the work will have been carried out by the manufacturer, e.g. smoked salmon and pate de foie gras, while others may be served in their natural state with only a simple decoration, e.g. melon portions and avocado pears. There are many other single hors-d'oeuvre, such as seafood cocktail, Parma ham and dressed crab, which make this course of the menu interesting and varied.
